Late Talkers

What is it?

A late talker is a child who has an age-appropriate ability to understand, has good play and social communication skills, BUT…has a smaller amount of words in their vocabulary than expected for their age.

How we support late talkers:

  • Use Hanen evidence-based strategies to support your child.
  • We coach you to be the best therapist for your child, at home!
  • Spot has therapists who want to empower YOU to build your child’s speech & language skills.

Language

What is it?

Language is different from speech. Language skills include:

  • Expressive language: vocabulary, spoken grammar, sentence structure and the ability to express yourself clearly.
  • Receptive Language: Ability to follow instructions, understand verbal and visual information, comprehension.

How we support language:

  • We teach strategies that people with language difficulties can use to be able to express themselves clearly. We also support them functionally and help them access to the curriculum/access the community. We focus on functional language goals that will have the greatest impact on the client’s life, long term.

Speech Sounds

What is it?

The ability to produce speech sounds.

How we support speech sounds:

We support speech sound delays and disorders by conducting assessments and therapy, all online! Difficulties may include producing a sound, or swapping one sound for another. We can identify these errors, and work towards clear and confident speech!

Down Syndrome

What is it?

Down Syndrome is a congenital disorder caused by a chromosome defect. People with Down Syndrome may experience communication, literacy, social communication and/or swallowing difficulties.

How we support people with Down Syndrome:

  • Have provided therapy supporting people with Down Syndrome of all ability levels via telehealth for years.
  • Target overall functional capacity and independence building, as well as speech, language, executive functioning, literacy and swallowing.

Social Communication

What is it?

Social communication includes all the skills necessary to make and maintain friendships.

How we support social communication:

At Spot, our experienced therapists use evidence-based programs that involve fun social-stories, with embedded concepts such as;

  • Flexibility
  • Managing emotions
  • Making and maintaining friendships
  • Thinking about others
  • And much more!

Attention & Working Memory

What is it?

The ability to attend to a task and retain and manipulate information is more highly correlated with academic success than intelligence (IQ). Poor working memory can have an impact on performance in school/work.

How we support attention and working memory:

  • We use evidence-based therapy methods based on neuroplasticity >the theory that the brain can be re-trained and conditioned through repetitions of the same task.
  • We teach learning strategies that can help compensate for attention & working memory difficulties.

Fussy Eating

What is it?

Children who have restricted diets caused by picky eating habits. This can impact their ability to meet their nutritional needs.

How we support fussy eating:

  • We assess the environmental impacts on your child’s eating habits and provide structures and support for creating the optimal mealtime environment.
  • We use behavioural programs that work to expose your child to a variety of foods and textures, bringing fun into your child’s experiences with food!

Swallowing/Dysphagia

What is it?

Dysphagia encompasses difficulties with swallowing. Dysphagia can lead to; coughing, choking, or food and fluid ‘going down the wrong way’ (into the lungs).

How we support swallowing:

At Spot we work with both children & adults with swallowing difficulties. We;

  • Complete swallow assessments via tele-health!
  • Provide strategies, support and dysphagia rehab over tele-health!
  • Assess your child’s suck-swallow pattern and determine if there are any risks of aspiration (children).
  • Provide strategies and refer to your local specialised clinicians if your presentation is acute.

Stuttering (Fluency)

What is it?

Stuttering is holding onto a sound, or repeating a sound, word or phrase, repeatedly, causing dysfluency in speech. It can also sound like someone is getting “stuck” on their words.

How we support fussy eating:

As for all of our services, early intervention can do amazing things for stuttering. However, it is never too late to work toward smoother speech!

  • We use evidence-based programs and provide strategies to develop and maintain smoother speech.

Literacy

What is it?

Literacy encompasses reading, writing and spelling. It’s important to note that children with literacy difficulties often end up being adults with literacy difficulties. It is NEVER too late to improve your literacy skills.

How we support literacy:

  • At Spot we use evidence-based, synthetic-phonics programs to target literacy.
  • We tailor each therapy program to the client, working our way up from their level to achieve long term literacy goals, whilst fostering confidence!
  • We focus on function in adulthood.

Tongue Tie

What is it?

Tongue tie is when the frenum (the tissue under the tongue) inhibits the normal functions of the mouth and face. Tongue tie can lead to:

  • Difficulty breastfeeding
  • Interdental speech sounds
  • Tongue-thrust swallow (forward movement of the tongue during swallowing)
  • Mouth breathing
  • Snoring
  • Oral habits such as thumb sucking
  • Recurring sickness (as a result of mouth breathing

How we support tongue tie:

  • We identify signs of tongue tie and work closely with specialists and a range of health professionals to holistically target any functional impairments associated with a tongue tie.
  • Spot therapists practise Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) retrain tongue position for speech and swallowing, as well as promoting nose breathing.

Voice

What is it?

Voice is the ability to produce sound from your vocal folds (your voice box). If someone’s voice sounds different than others their age, or if it sounds different than usual, they may have a voice disorder. This happens for a number of reasons. If you think you might have a voice disorder, give us a call and we can book you in for a consultation.

How we support voice:

  • Work closely with amazing Ear, Nose and Throat doctors, who can have a look at the vocal folds (voice box), and together, we make a plan for helping our client use their voice safely, and effectively.
  • Use evidence-based approaches to voice therapy, targeting the precise muscles involved.
  • Teach our clients how to project their voice safely!

Stroke Rehab

What is it?

Damage to the brain after stroke can cause a number of difficulties, including difficulties with language, speech and higher order thinking. Each of these difficulties requires a different kind of rehabilitation therapy.

How we support stroke rehab:

After leaving the hospital rehabilitation ward, many of our rural and regional clients are not able to access the day-clinic services that they need. That’s where we come in! Spot can provide rehabilitation therapies for people with;

  • Aphasia
  • Dysarthria
  • Dysphagia
  • Cognitive-Communication Disorder.

We can do this all from the comfort of your own home!

Degenerative Disease

How we support those with degenerative diseases:

  • Provide therapy via tele-health, in the comfort of the client’s own home.
  • Provide thorough education regarding speech, voice and swallowing changes.
  • Work with you, your family and other health professionals involved in your care, in order to develop compensatory strategies, in preparation for the progression of the disease.

  • Work closely with the other health professionals involved in your care, to understand the neurological changes involved, and resulting difficulties.
  • Provide compensatory strategies for difficulties that are impacting your life functionally.
  • Provide education to you, and your communication partners, regarding how best to support communication.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

What is ASD?

Often those with ASD have difficulty with; hitting their language and play-skills milestones, social communication, speech, language and/or literacy. But…ASD is different for everyone! This means that therapy needs to be tailored to the person with ASD, and take into account their strengths as well as their difficulties.
